About This Place

Located in the heart of Chicago’s Washington Heights neighborhood, Top Notch Beefburgers is a classic American hamburger restaurant that masterfully captures the essence of a timeless diner experience. From the moment you step inside, the cozy, old-school ambiance invites you to settle into one of the signature booths and prepare for a truly satisfying meal steeped in tradition.

This beloved spot has earned a reputation for its hearty, no-nonsense approach to classic American fare, with an emphasis on perfectly crafted beefburgers that pack serious flavor. The menu boasts standout dishes such as the Half Pound Cheeseburger and Fries with Cheese, the indulgent Cheeseburger Deluxe with Mushroom, Bacon, and Onion Rings, and the crowd-favorite Bacon Double Cheeseburger. Each burger arrives generously portioned and sizzling hot, boasting juicy patties with just the right amount of char, nestled between soft, buttery buns with all the traditional fixings: crisp lettuce, ripe tomatoes, tangy pickles, and a harmonious blend of mayo, ketchup, and mustard.

Beyond the beef, Top Notch also showcases delicious alternatives such as the Great Turkey Burger—available with or without cheese and made fresh with thoughtful toppings—as well as tempting chicken sandwiches. The Italian Chicken Sandwich, layered with mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce, offers a delightful twist on the classic burger joint staples, while the Cajun Chicken Sandwich delivers a flavor kick that complements the more traditional offerings perfectly.

What truly elevates the meal at Top Notch, however, are the hand-crafted shakes and sides that evoke a warm sense of nostalgia. The Oreo Milkshake and Strawberry Shake are refreshingly creamy and generously thick, made to satisfy any sweet tooth without being overly rich. The large root beer floats are another highlight, pairing bubbling, frosty soda with velvety vanilla ice cream for a delightful sip of Americana. Alongside the burgers, golden fries and crispy, perfectly seasoned onion rings round out every meal with a gratifying crunch.

Reviews from regulars underscore the quality and consistency that keep Top Notch a neighborhood favorite. Ken Stott praises the beef burger patty melt for its buttery grilled rye bread and melty cheese combo, calling it a comforting classic done exactly right. Asha Ballard recommends the mozzarella sticks and cheese fries alongside a creamy milkshake—reminders of the simple, honest pleasures that Top Notch delivers so well. Another loyal diner, Tom Murphy, commends the “fantastic” beef and the welcoming, friendly staff who make every visit pleasant, even if the prices reflect the quality and portion size.

Whether you’re craving a timeless patty melt with fries or want to indulge in a king-size deluxe beefburger accompanied by a thick, frosty shake, Top Notch Beefburgers offers an authentic taste of American diner culture. Its vintage charm, commitment to hearty, flavorful food, and attentive service make it more than just a meal — it’s a comforting experience that beckons you back time and time again.

I tried the beef burger patty melt with fries and it really hit the spot. The grilled rye was buttery and crisp and wrapped around that melty cheese and beef patty just right. The onions were sweet and the whole thing was comforting in a classic way. The fries on the side were golden and paired well with the sandwich. It felt like a timeless diner meal done exactly right and I’ll be back for that again.

I ordered a burger, a turkey burger, boneless buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks, cheese cup for cheese fries, and a cookies and crème milkshake. The establishment is on the older side so I passed on dining in, but the service was great and the food was really good. Definitely get the mozzarella sticks, cheese fries, and a shake! If you like an old school burger then this is the place for you! -I was hungry so I ate half the burger

I have never had a bad meal here! I haven't been here in a few years but had the occasion to be in the area and had lunch here. I had the chili which was delicious and really but the spot. I also had a patty melt which was so tasty and cooked perfectly and they have good fries. Our waitress was delightful and the price was reasonable. It looks like an old fashion diner and feels very homey. Parking can be tough sometimes but it's worth it. Give it a try if you are in the area.

This is a great spot for a classic burger - the beef is really fantastic. The restaurant is really cute and cozy - we love hanging out in the booths, it's really relaxing. The staff here is really great - the waitresses and the counter staff are always so nice and inviting. We'd go here all the time, but it is pricy for the area. 2 burgers, 2 fries, and 2 sodas ran us about $45 (before tipping). This is more of a "special treat" for us.

Classic diner. Giant burgers, tasty shakes, great vibe. A cultural touchstone. A rite of passage. A little space of grace. A lot a changed. Let’s hope Top Notch never does. Also once I stayed there for 5 hours while my car was being repaired across the street and drank like 12 cups of coffee.

I had an extremely long day with work and making a hospital visit. I had not eaten all day and this was the perfect end to a day like mine. I had the chilli and a deluxe hamburger extra onions. It was delicious from the first bite to the last. My only gripe was my missing cheese cup that I ordered.....it never made it to the table. But everything was hot and fresh so it was missed by me and the server.
